Elevators

Are building is not new and neither are the elevators.
But like the rest of our building it was built to a very high standard and was well maintained.
Our elevators go through cycles were they break a lot. Last year was one of them. We are trying to get a handle on why. Some think it does not matter why, they should just be replaced. We have received prices of up to $4,000,000. to replace the 8 elevators. The city code says if we replace one we must replace all 8. replacing the elevators might or might not stop the elevators from breaking especially since we are not sure of the reason. Let me explain.
This year there has been a pattern that the elevators are not breaking as much. When they do break I have been informally tracking the reason. It is usually on windy days and when the weather is cool and balcony doors are open. Opening the doors on windy days makes the halls a wind tunnel and cause the elevators and the elevator doors to be pushed around and cause the malfunction. Closing the doors and resetting gets the elevators working.
I am against replacing the elevators. Elevators are made up of many parts. A motor, a computer, a shaft, cables, safety hardware, doors and cabs. The computer is only a few years old. The motor in our elevators is high maintenance. They have been well maintained and should last many years longer. The doors might need new parts as they wear. The safety equipment is inspected every year.
If we get elevator consultants to examine the elevators and they find problems and recommend the best course of action is replacement I will follow there recommendation and change my mind.
